The Empire State Summer Games is a yearly, state-wide competition that features many different athletic sporting events. The games use a regional qualifying system in which the state is broken down into six areas (Adirondack, Western, Central, Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island). Upon finishing among the top spots in your region for your event, the athlete/team advances to the finals which feature the best competitors from each area.

Rosalia Gioia attended Hunter College from 1949 through 1953 during the time where basketball, swimming, fencing, field hockey and tennis were the only varsity sports that were supported. The three year member of the field hockey team, and four year member of the basketball team had a reputation for her aggressiveness on the field and court. “Junior” as she was known by, made a name for herself through her hard work ethic and hustle and earned the respect of her fellow athletes and coaches.

It’s a blessing for any coach that an athlete with raw, untapped talent shows up out of the blue and falls into their hands. The potential this type of athlete has is coveted by many, possessed by few, and comes along on rare occasions. This was the case with former Hawk standout, runner Omri Holzman, who personifies the described traits; raw, untapped talent.

Former Hawk wrestler Anthony Romano was awarded the James Gordon Bennett Medal for “acting in the highest tradition and without regard for his own personal safety to rescue a fellow member.” He responded to a fire in Richmond Hill, Queens on the morning of February 26, 2008 and was assigned the outside vent position. He climbed the ladder to the second floor, entered a window with heavy black smoke coming out of it, found fellow fire fighter Robert Grover who was trapped in the building and escaped the burning house, saving his life.

New York, NY – Hunter College student-athletes were honored on Friday, May 21 for their hard work and dedication throughout the last nine months that spawned three CUNYAC Championships, men’s volleyball’s third consecutive ECAC Championship, six NCAA Tournament appearances, the program’s 20th CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and countless numbers of All-Stars and postseason award winners at the 40th Annual Hunter Athletics Awards Banquet.

New York, NY – On Wednesday, May 12, the CUNY Athletic conference gathered to honors the best and brightest amongst the conference student-athletes at the 24th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner where Hunter senior women’s tennis player Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) was named the 2009-10 Senior College Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

New York, NY – Senior catcher, Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) has been named as the CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Year while four other Hawks received All-Star accolades as announced by the conference office. Frank, a two-time All-Star, ended the season with a .427 batting average and .819 slugging percentage and collected 34 hits, 32 RBI, seven doubles and six home runs. Behind the plate, she posted a .972 fielding percentage, had 95 put outs and threw out four attempting to steal. Over her career, she has amassed 197 total bases and 11 home runs, both of which rank fourth all-time in the Hawk record books. Additionally, she leaves hunter with a .362 lifetime batting average, 120 hits and 92 RBI.
