Hawks Triumphant Over Stevens, 26-25

New York, NY – Senior 197 pounder Brian Scher (Levittown, NY/MacArthur) sealed the deal for the Hawks on Friday with a 3:54 pin on junior Ernie Guaimano (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) to give the Hawks a 26-19 lead and the eventual 26-25 victory over the #27 Stevens Institute of Technology Friday afternoon on Homecoming Day at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Senior Evan Velez (Bronx, NY/Lehman) improved to 7-4 on the season with a 16-0 tech fall on junior Frank Maselli (Rye, NY/The Hackley School) in the early part of the third period.

133 pounds

After singing the national anthem only moments earlier, freshman Sean Messina (West Islip, NY/West Islip) hit the mat with only business in mind and came out on top once again, earning a 1:365 pin on freshman Brad Warren (Brookeville, MD/Gaithersburg) to improve to 4-0 on the season.

141 pounds

In a back and forth, low scoring match, sophomore Kyle Cammaroto (Amityville, NY/Amityville) was able to earn an escape point with only a few second left on the clock to pick up his second win of the season with a 3-2 decision over senior Pat Conrad (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) and gave the Hawks a 14-0 lead.

149 pounds

Junior Charles Favia (Brick, NJ/CBA) helped Stevens get on the board with 4-2 decision on Hunter junior Vitaly Simkin (Brooklyn, NY/Sheepshead Bay).

157 pounds

Junior Leo Dormann kept things moving in Stevens direction with a 13-3 major decision on freshman Matt Cartusciello (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) who now falls to 4-6 on the season.

174 pounds

Steven then took its first lead of day, after senior Jordan Chacon (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) pinned freshman Ryan Baxter (New York, NY/Hunter) in 2:59.

184 pounds

Sophomore Joey Scott (Walden, NY/Valley Central) remained unbeaten on the season with a 1:51 pin on sophomore Vincent Termini (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), regaining the lead for Hunter, 20-19.

Heavyweight

In the match of the day, junior James Roarty pinned junior Dan Heydebrand (New York, NY, Leadership) in the third period, but the points he earned for his team would not be enough to overturn the lead.

Following today's victory, the Hawks now improve to 3-2 on the season in dual meets, while Stevens fall to 1-4 overall. Hunter will be back in action on Wednesday, December 10 when they travel to Kings Point, NY for a match with the Merchant Marine Academy.
