Pittsburgh, PA – Freshman
Elizabeth Feldman (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) locked in the Hawks victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles lifting the Hawks over Wilkes University 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament hosted by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. The Hawks will now face the defending national champion Washington & Lee at 100 p.m. on Saturday, May 3.
The Hawks took the early 2-0 lead with Feldman and sophomore
Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) winning their first doubles match 8-2 and the duo of junior M
onica Calungcagin (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) sophomore
Louise Hollander (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) took second doubles 8-5.
Trailing 5-1 in their doubles match, senior
Antigone Tzakis (Astoria, NY/St. John's Prep) and sophomore
Linda Ravul (Little Neck, NY/St. Mary's) rallied back and went on to win third singles 9-8 to put Hunter up 3-0.
Moving on to singles play, the Lady Colonels got things going with sophomore
Katie Buckely (Danville, PA/Danville) winning her sixth singles match over
Ravul 6-0, 6-0 and then freshman
Victoria Bybel (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) defeated
Hollander 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Hawks got some breathing room when
Kim improved to 18-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at first singles and then
Feldman wrapped things up with her win at third singles. Per NCAA rules, all the remaining matches were suspended once the match was official won by Hunter.
This was the second meeting between the Hawks and Wilkes University after the first round of last year's NCAA Regional when Hunter defeated the Lady Colonels 5-1.
