New York, NY – Freshman runner
James McArdle (Williston Park, NY/Herricks) was named the CUNY Athletic Conference men’s outdoor track & field Rookie of the Year after an outstanding first-year with the Hawks that included two gold and one silver medal at the conference championship meet last month. In addition, hall of fame head coach
Ed Zarowin was named Coach of the Year by his peers and two other members of the men’s team were named all-stars.
In his first event at the conference championships, held on May 11 at Icahn Stadium,
McArdle set a personal best while earning a gold medal in the 800 meter run, crossing the finish line at 2:04.53, an improvement of 0:03.10 that he set earlier in the season at the CTC Championships.
McArdle also won gold in the 400 meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:05.71 and placed second in the 110 meter hurdles in 20.26 to finish the day with a team high 28 points.
Freshmen
Luis Cabrera (New York, NY/Leadership) and
Ben Chateauvert (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) each garnered all-star honors for their efforts at the championships.
Cabrera won gold in the 5,000 meter run and won silver in the 10,000 meter run, while
Chateauvert brought home his gold in the 1,500 meter run.
Coach
Zarowin, now in his 24th season with the team, picks up his sixth outdoor Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Hawks to their sixth championship since 1996.
