New York, NY – Freshman
Max Segan (New York, NY/Hunter), who played first singles for the Hawks all season, has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year after a 10-5 campaign that included a 7-1 conference record. In addition, head coach
Eric Metzger was honored by his peers as Coach of the Year after guiding the Hawks to one of the best seasons in the program’s history, going 12-4 on the year with a 7-1 record in CUNYAC play during his first year at the helm.
Segan, who’s only conference loss during the regular season came to the Player of the Year, Konstantin Trofimovich of the College of Staten Island. Segan also finished with an 11-3 overall doubles record, 7-2 when paired with sophomore Roy Forberg. The duo also went 4-1 in conference play, while Segan finished with a 6-1 overall doubles record against conference opponents.
Metzger took over a team that finished third in the CUNYAC in 2008 with a 6-2 conference record, 10-6 overall and improved them to a 12-4 program that finished second in both the regular and postseason. Metzger’s team started off the season with five consecutive 9-0 victories, showing early dominance and beat the remaining conference teams by no less than 7-2. They would end up advancing to the conference finals before falling to Baruch who won their sixth straight championship.
