New York, NY – Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) not only scored a Hawk career high of 20 points, recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 20 rebounds to lead the Hawks past the College of Staten Island 82-72 in CUNY Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Whyms becomes the first Hawk to have a 20 point, 20 rebound game since Andrea Buckham did it against N.Y. City Tech back on February 7, 2007.

Hunter controlled the game from the tip, building a 12-6 lead five minutes in and eventually took a 22-8 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. Then trailing by 23 points, 40-17 with 4:38 left, the Dolphins used a 14-4 run to cut the deficit down to 13 points heading into halftime. The game didn’t change much in the second half as Hunter held a double-digit lead the whole way through despite a couple Staten Island runs.

For the Hawks, five finished in double-figures with Whyms leading the way, followed by junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) scoring 16 points along with five assists, senior guard Deseree Boler (Bronx, NY/Patapsco) netting 15 points, freshman guard Johanna Keilwitz (Wolmirstedt, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle) finishing with 12 points and senior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) had a quiet ten points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) was the only starter to not score ten points or more, finishing with nine, but her 12 assists was just one shy of a tying a school record and matches the highest total since Lindsay Meltzer had 12 on November 19, 2004.

For the Dolphins, freshman forward Katelyn Hepworth scored a team high 17 points, while senior guard Kristen Panariello added 11 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Hunter (10-6, 5-2 CUNYAC) will now travel to Purchase, NY on Monday where they will face the Panthers of Purchase College (5-10) for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
