Eric Klingsberg (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) was honored as the Rookie of the Year at the annual CUNY Athletic Conference Basketball luncheon held at the Water Club on Thursday afternoon.
After averaging 5.7 points per game with the Terriers of Saint Francis College last season, Rubino has exploded onto the Division III scene with an 18.7 scoring average, sixth highest in the conference. He has been impeccable from the free throw line, shooting a conference best 84 percent. He also ranks amongst the best in the conference in several categories, third in assists, fourth in assist/turnover ratio, seventh in three point field goals made, 11th in three-point field goal percentage and 20th in rebounding.
A four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Klingsberg has been impressive since first stepping onto the floor for the Hawks. Earlier in the season in a win over FDU-Florham, Klingsberg scored a career best 39 points, the third most scored in a game in the last eight years. In 25 games this season, Klingsberg averaged 15.6 points, shooting 44 percent from the field and 79.7 percent from the free throw line. He ranks seventh in free throw percentage, 11th in the conference in scoring, 12th in three-point field goal percentage, and 15th in three-pointers made.
The Hawks will kick-off the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday, when they host the fifth-seeded Medgar Evers Cougars for a 3:00 p.m. Quarterfinal game at the Hunter Sportsplex.
