Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) have been named CUNY Athletic Conference second team all-stars and head coach
Vana Loukissas was named Coach of the Year as announced at the annual CUNYAC Basketball luncheon held at the Water Club on Thursday afternoon.
Loukissas, now in her third season at the helm of the women's basketball program, helped guide the Hawks to a 15-10 overall record this season, the program's first winning season since 2005-06. In addition, the Hawks went 10-3 in the conference, finishing second overall. This was a big turnaround from last season when the Hawks were 8-18 overall and 5-9 in the conference.
Currently averaging a double-double on the season with 12.3 points and 12.7 rebounds, Whyms has been a dominant force in the paint this season. Her rebounding numbers are amongst the best in the nation as she currently ranks16th. In the conference, she presently ranks second in rebounding, third in blocked shots, and is 15th in scoring, free-throw percentage, and steals. In an incredible performance against John Jay just a week ago, she recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 25 rebounds and 11 blocked shots Her rebounding and blocked shots numbers from that game set new program single-game highs.
McKenna, who is a two-time first-team all-star in softball, earned her first basketball all-star honors after leading the Hawks in scoring with 15.2 points per game, which is the eighth highest average in the conference. Conference wise, McKenna also ranks fourth in assist/turnover ratio, ninth in free throw percentage, tenth in assists, 11th in field goal percentage, and 15th in three-point field goals made.
The Hawks will kick-off the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Sunday, when they host the seventh-seeded CCNY for a 3:00 p.m. Quarterfinal game at the Hunter Sportsplex.
