Messina & Delgado Finish Third at Met Championship

Ewing, NJ – Sophomore Sean Messina (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and junior Eduardo Delgado (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) battled their way thought the brackets to earn third place finishes and helped the Hawks to an eighth place finish at the 2010 Metropolitan Conference Championships hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.

Messina, who entered the tournament as the fourth-seed, started things off with a 7-1 decision over fifth-seeded Eric Rhoades of Elizabethtown. However, his run towards a championship was cut short by the eventual champion, Gregg Martino of NYU who defeated Messina 7-3. Messina's first match in the consolation bracket was against third-seeded Kristopher Krawchuck where he avenged giving up a major decision in the season opener, by earning his own 9-0 major decision on Sunday. He then closed out with tournament with an 8-4 decision over Centenary's David Alsieux to take third place.

Delgado entered the tournament as the second seed at 157 pounds. In his opening match, he defeated Michael Guenther of Scranton with a 9-1 major decision. He then came up short in his next match, falling to the third-seeded Taylor Green of Kings College 6-4. Delgado's first match of the consolation bracket was a 10-5 decision on fifth-seeded Nathan White of Wilkes, he then claim third place by pinning the top-seeded Justin Bonitatis of TCNJ in 2:05. For his efforts, Delgado was name as an alternate for the NCAA Tournament, in case either of the two participants who received bids are unable to compete.

After losing a close bout in his opening match, junior RJ Klotz fought his way through the consolation bracket, defeating the fourth-seeded Frank Marinucci of Kings 3-1, then took down Kevin DiGiulio of Scranton in 4:14. He then defeated JJ Mitchell of Centenary 5-4, before falling to fifth-seeded Paul Connors of Elizabethtown to end up finishing fourth overall.
