New York, NY – The men's fencing team earned two big victories on Sunday, defeating the University of Virginia 17-10 and then edging out William & Mary 14-13 at the final MACFA event of the season, hosted by New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ.
Hunter 17 – Virginia 10
Senior
Darin Boodram had his best bout of the day against Virginia, finishing 3-0, while junior
Jose Samora, Jr. also won all this of his bouts and junior
Marcus Ng won two of his three bouts to give the foil team an 8-1 win. The Hawks won epee 6-3 as sophomore
Nial Welch led the way with three wins, followed by freshman
Kevin Var taking two wins. Depsite a 6-3 loss at sabre, freshman
Gianluca Arianna won two of this three bouts.
Hunter 14 - William & Mary 13
Foil continued its success with a 7-2 win over William & Mary with Samora leading the way by winning all three of his bouts, while Boodram and Ng each finished with 2-1 records. Junior
Michael Quackenbush then helped get things going for the epee squad by going 2-1, followed by sophomore
Justin Lokossou and Welch who also went 2-1 in the match. Arianna picked up the team's lone win during an 8-1 loss at sabre.
Virginia Tech 15 – Hunter 12
The sabre squad earned their only victory of the day, defeating Virginia Tech 5-4 with Ariana going 2-1 and hen four others each grabbing a win. Despite a 6-3 loss at foil, Samora still won all three of his bouts, while Welch went 2-1 in a 5-4 loss at epee.
Haverford 22 – Hunter 5
The Hawks struggled against a strong Haverford team, winning just five bouts, with Samora and Ng going 2-1 in sabre and freshman
Isaac Orbe grabbing a win in epee.
The Hawks will now prepare for the MACFA Championships which will be held at Drew University in Madison, NJ on Sunday, February 28.
