New York, NY – The Hawks pursuit of a CUNYAC Championship came to an end on Saturday, despite a game high, 28-point performance from junior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway), as they fell to Baruch College 93-84 in the finals of the 2010 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women’s Basketball Tournament held of Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of CCNY.

Hunter opened the game with a 9-2 run, but the Bearcats fought back and captured a 15-14 lead with 8:44 left in the half. Then after falling behind by seven points with 2:08 left, the Hawks were able to cut the lead down to just three points, 31-28 at halftime. Baruch then took control in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 62-56 en route to their third consecutive championship.

Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 22 points and a game high 18 rebounds, while senior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) added 12 points and eight rebounds, and junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) scored 12 points of her own. Senior guard Deseree Boler (Bronx, NY/Patapsco) scored eight points, had seven rebounds and tied a team high of seven assists. Stewartson also had seven assists and a game high six steals. For their efforts in the postseason, Whyms and Stewartson were named to the all-tournament team.

Hunter (17-11) will now look towards the ECAC Championship Tournament which starts on Wednesday, March 3, with their opponent to be announced on Monday.
