New York, NY - The men's track and field team concluded their season this weekend by competing in the NYC Qualifying Challenge on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The meet held at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island had competitors from all three NCAA divisions and included open athletes.
On Friday night sophomore Nikoloz Rekhviashvili (Forest Hills, NY/Forest Hills) led four Hawks runners in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.62. He was followed by freshman Lorenzo Daley (Ocho Rios, Jamaica/G.W. Carver) with a time of 25.06, sophomore Legenry Sosa (Bronx, NY/Monroe Academy) in 26.32, and sophomore Jeffrey Castano (Little Neck, NY/Fort Hamilton) in 28.53. Also competing on Friday night running the 400 meter hurdles were sophomore Rekhviashvili in 1:04.11 and freshman Jose Miranda (Staten Island, NY/Xavier) in 1:07.89.
On a very windy Saturday Rekhviashvili ran in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.10 and the 110 high hurdles in a time of 17.70. He also threw the javelin with a best throw of 24.11 meters. Also in the javelin freshman Omar Olivella (Astoria, NY/St. John's Prep) had a best throw of 23.87 meters. Running in the 400 meter sophomore Andrew Wong (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) finished in 1:03.81 while freshman Alex Ronis (Brooklyn, NY/Stuyvesant) ran 1:08.25. In the 800 meter run junior Gem Alegre (Hollis, NY/Martin Van Buren), led a trio of Hawks with a time of 2:20.21. He was followed by freshman Joseph Papa in 2:23.47 and sophomore Wong in 2:30.06. Rounding out the day's events freshman Ryan Baxter (New York, NY/Hunter) competed in the discus with a best throw of 19.30 meters.
