New York, NY – On Wednesday, May 12, the CUNY Athletic conference gathered to honors the best and brightest amongst the conference student-athletes at the 24th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner where Hunter senior women's tennis player
Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) was named the 2009-10 Senior College Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Kim is a special talent that doesn't come around every day. She is a leader, a talented student and also happens to be the most accomplished tennis player, male or female, in the 25 year-history of the CUNY Athletic Conference. Off the court, Kim is an excellent student with a 3.70 grade point average with a full merit scholarship to CUNY's Macauley Honors College. A double major in Political Science and English, she is determined to make a difference in the world of international affairs, specializing in human rights and is already making strides in the field. This year,
Kim secured a very competitive internship at the Open Society's Central Eurasia Project and has been conducting research on topics such as labor migration, economic rights and the abuse of human rights in the region.
A four-time CUNYAC Player of the Year,
Kim has led the Hawks to four consecutive Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Playing first singles and doubles, she finished her Hawk career as the all-time leader in singles wins with an astounding record of 65-8 record. She is also Hunter's all-time leader in doubles wins with a 59-17 record. Her talent level was unmatched as she never lost a CUNYAC match, in both regular and postseason. This season she made her fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
In addition, three Hunter student-athletes,
Darin Boodram,
Andreas Kalpaxis, and
Karolina Koguc were named honorable mention selections. Boodram is a four-year member of the men's fencing team and has also been active on campus, serving this past year as the president of Hunter's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Kalpaxis is a four-year starter from the men's soccer team where he earned conference first-team all-star honors in three seasons, while leading the Hawks to a conference title in his junior season. Koguc played four-years of women's volleyball, winning two championships, was the 2005 Rookie of the Year and closed out her career ranked fourth all-time at Hunter in digs, and was 11th all-time in kills.
Kim becomes the 20th Hunter student-athlete to be named as a CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, since the awards inception in 1987.
