Five Student Athletes Represent Hunter at Empire State Games

Oliver Lopez earned top honors in his weight class.
The Empire State Summer Games is a yearly, state-wide competition that features many different athletic sporting events. The games use a regional qualifying system in which the state is broken down into six areas (Adirondack, Western, Central, Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island). Upon finishing among the top spots in your region for your event, the athlete/team advances to the finals which feature the best competitors from each area.

Five Hawks took part in the games; wrestlers Oliver Lopez (Santo Domingo, D.R., McKee), Eduardo Delgado (Long Beach, NY, Long Beach) and James Mustakis (East Meadow, NY, East Meadow), Eric Barty (Jamaica, NY, Cardozo) in volleyball and Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY, Midwood) in softball. Delgado and Mustakis competed for the Long Island region while the rest of the Hunter contingent played for New York City.

Lopez competed in the 58kg class of Greco Roman wrestling and won the event by defeating Steven Ketcham 2-0, 2-0 for a gold medal. Delgado wrestled in the 76kg weight class, won each of his four matches over the two-day span and took home gold as well, defeating Lamont Fleming of Central in an 8-3, 3-3, 5-1 decision. At the 69kg weight class, Mustakis put together a 5-1 record and took home a bronze medal for his efforts.

On the volleyball court, Barty helped the New York City squad to a 5-3 overall record, culminating in a bronze medal. The team won their opening round over Long Island, but suffered their first loss in the second round to Adirondack. They bounced back and took the next three games before being outplayed by Western and again by Adirondack in the medal round.

McKenna and the New York City team compiled a 1-4 record at the games with a win coming over Hudson Valley on the first day of play thanks to a late three run effort in the fifth inning, giving them the 7-5 lead which would stand for the rest of the game. Overall, McKenna went 3-11, scored three runs and had three RBI.
