Although he did not attend college until he was 40 years old, Larkin may arguably be the top male fencer in Hunter’s long and storied fencing history. A three-time NCAA Tournament qualifier in sabre, he excelled in the national spotlight, competing against primarily Division I institutions. As a freshman, he posted a 37-2 record and went on to place 15th at nationals. In his sophomore year, he made it to the second round of nationals after capturing the CUNYAC Championship and NCAA Eastern Regional. In his junior campaign, he recorded a 31-1 record and for the second consecutive year won the CUNYAC and NCAA Eastern Regional Championships. In his final year, Larkin became a three-time CUNYAC Champion and recorded a 36-3 mark. Don was also a two-time Empire State sabre champion, and in 1985 won the prestigious Dan Tishman Memorial Award presented by the United States Fencing Association.
