ITHACA, NY - Senior Yevgeny Perpelov participated this past weekend in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Ithaca College. Perpelove did an outstanding job reaching the finals, but lost in the championship match to Oliver Loutsenko of Skidmore 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in a hard fought match.
Perpelov was the only CUNYAC player in the tournament to make it past the first round. He won his first round match against Tim Wu of NYU 6-4, 7-5, while the only other CUNYAC Player Nikolas Zikos of Staten Island dropped his first round match.
In the second round, the Hawk easily disposed of his opponent from TCNJ with a score of 6-3, 7-5 advancing himself to the third round. There, he quickly defeated Chandler Daub of RIT 6-1, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, Perpolv had a tougher time defeating Benjamin Foran of Stevens. After dropping the first set 4-6, he stormed back to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2, taking 2 and a half hours to do so.
The semi-finals deemed no differently, as Perpolv faced Foran's teammate Chris Rosensteel. Once again, the Hawk dropped the first set 1-6, but bounced back to take the second 6-3 and the third 6-4.
After going down 6-2 in the first set in the championship match, Perpelov regrouped and was able to grind out a 7-5 score in the second. Unfortunately, Loutsenko was too strong and took the third and final set 7-5.
