New York, NY – Freshman 133 pounder Sean Messina (West Islip, NY/West Islip) opened up the bout with a 4:49 pin in his collegiate debut, but it the end, it would be New York University just outlasting Hunter 22-15 in the Violets season opener on Saturday at the Coles Sports Center in New York, NY.

After taking the 6-0 lead, the Hawks dropped the next five matches, but still only trailed 16-6. Sophomore Joey Scott (Walden, NY/Valley Central) gave the Hawks another six points with a 2:26 pin on freshman Steve Massey (Yonkers, NY/Fordham Prep) and then senior Brian Scher (Levittown, NY/MacArthur) closed the gap to 16-15 with a 6-0 decision over freshman Jamie Myers (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) at 197 pounds. However, NYU was ale to pull out the victory after earning an 8-3 decision at heavyweight and a 7-5 decision at 125 pounds.

Hunter, now 1-1 on the year, will travel north on Friday to compete in the annual Ithaca Invitational. Last season, the Hawks took third overall with Scott and Andre DeCristo winning at 184 and 174 pounds.
