Bronx, NY – For the first time November 17, 2003, the Hunter women’s swimming team suffered a conference defeat, coming up short 116-114 to Lehman College on Saturday afternoon at the APEX.

In a very competitive meet, Hunter won seven of the 11 events they competed in, led by senior Heather Alvord (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) who picked up wins in both the 200-yard freestyle [2:10.83] and the 100-yard backstroke [1:04.70].

Senior Carla Mendoza (College Point, NY/Bayshore) had season bests in the 1000-yard freestyle, which she won with a time of 14:16.36 and the 500-yard freestyle where she placed third with a time of 7:00.12. Sophomore Gloria Reyna (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) also had a season best, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 28.90. Senior Stephanie Benenati (Dix Hills, NY/Hills West) had the Hawks seventh first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, tapping the pad at 1:23.75.

Hunter also excelled in both relay events, earning valuable team points with first place finishes in the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays. However, the deciding factor in this meet came from the diving board as Hunter has been without a diver all semester and Lehman had a total of four compete in the 1 and 3 meter diving events which earned them 25 team points.

This was Hunter’s final meet of the semester, they return to the pool on January 8, 2010 when they host Baruch College for a 6:00 p.m. meet.
