Two Former Grapplers in Pursuit of Olympic Dreams

New York, NY - In 2007, Terrance Madden became the first Hunter wrestler to win a National Championship. Since then, Madden has remained active on the US National and International freestyle wrestling circuit. Competing this past weekend at the ASICS U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, Madden finished fifth overall in the 74kg weight class with a 4-2 record on the day. His performance earned him a trip to Council Bluffs, Iowa where he will compete for a spot on the world team. The matches are scheduled for June 11-12 at the Mid-America Center.

In 2008, Madden placed third at the Regional Olympic Trials in Pueblo, Colorado and in 2007, he represented the United States at the Canada Cup where he defeated wrestlers from Puerto Rico, South Africa and Canada.
In 2009-10, the former two-time All-American joined the coaching staff at Hofstra University, serving as an assistant coach for the Pride wrestling team.

Shintaro Higashi, another former Hunter wrestler, is also in pursuit of an Olympic dream in Judo. Higashi is presently ranked second in the nation and recently posted a 7-0 record at the Ocean State Games in Rhode Island where he defeated the top seeded Kyle Vashkulat in the Senior Men's Elite 100kg class.
Higashi will now compete at the US Judo Senior World Team Trials on May 1-2 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. If he makes the team, he will go on and compete in the World Championships in Tokyo and be one step closer to his Olympic pursuit; London 2012.

Higashi is no stranger to Judo as he competed prior to joining the Hunter wrestling program. His athletic resume includes a three-time Junior National Champion, High School National Champion, two-time World Team Alternate, 2008 Beijing Olympic Trials Qualifier, 2007 National Champion, two-time Fall Classic Champion and a bronze medal finish at the US Open.
