Bronx, N.Y. – On Sunday, October 28, the women's cross country team competed in the  CUNYAC/US Army Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park. Backed by the strength of an individual first place finish by senior Lizzy Mahoney, the Hawks claimed second place.

Mahoney, the Hawks' captain, has led the way the entire year and today was no different. Her performance of 22:59 over 6k was good enough to earn the overall individual title, beating out her nearest competitor by an impressive 1:08. The mark broke the previous CUNYAC record for the 6K by 1:35 as she solidifies herself as the top CUNYAC runner of all-time on the women's side. Mahoney's previous best in the championship was the 24:53 she ran as a rookie in 2009. She now holds four of the top 10 times in a 6K CUNYAC Championship and finished her career having not placed below third overall in a CUNYAC Championship race.

“It was my last one. I have been doing this for 10 years and to PR on this course, that big was unbelievable,” exclaimed Mahoney. “I have known what the course record has been since 2008 and I really wanted that time. It was a big goal I set for myself. Coming across the line and knowing I got it was just an amazing feeling.”

Teammate Shantel Peters and Stephie-Anne Duliepre also had outstanding races, both finishing in the top-10 and within four seconds of one another. Peters covered the course in 25:33 for seventh while Duliepre was just four seconds back in eighth place.

Mary Leong was the Hawks' fourth runner to cross the line. Her time of 26:56 was good enough for 15th place, meanwhile, Alexandra Martinovic capped the scoring-five, turning in a time of 27:31 for 21st place.

Hunter registered 52 points while race winners, Baruch, posted 39 points courtesy of taking three of the top-five spots. John Jay checked in at third to edge CCNY by two points while Brooklyn was fifth.

The Hawks are back in action on Sunday, September 4 when they compete in the NJIT Halloween Invitational before racing at the NCAA Regional the following Saturday.
