Hawks Capture Second Place at 2012 CUNYAC/Applebee's Championships

Day Three Results

BRONX, NY - The Hunter College women's swimming team claimed 20 medals, including 12 silver and eight bronze en route to capturing second place with 918 points at the 13th annual CUNYAC/Applebee's Swimming & Diving Championship held at the APEX Aquatic Center at Lehman on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks trailed only Baruch College who led all the way with 1058 points, claiming the title for a third straight year. Rounding out the field of seven were John Jay (443) who took third, Lehman (332) in fourth and Brooklyn (271) in fifth. The College of Staten Island (253) ended up in sixth place while York College (76) came in seventh.

Briana DiGiore earned a second place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 20:56.26 to get things rolling for the Hawks.

Then, in the 200 yard backstroke freshman standout Chryzl Goco took second in 2:26.54 just seconds ahead of teammate and senior Marian Wu who slid into third with a 2:28.55 timestamp to place the Hawks among the top-five.

Hunter turned in a solid performance in the 100 yard freestyle as sophomore Jennifer Dzurita glided into second place with a time of 58.87 ahead of both Charlotte Collazo (1:00.85) and Tiffany Magno (1:01.79).

Senior Sarah McGovern turned in the best swim for Hunter in the 200 yard breaststroke, nabbing sixth place in 3:13.16 in front of freshman Wynette Almeida who claimed seventh place with a time of 3:16.09.

The 200 yard butterfly saw a pair of Hawks finish in the top-five as Courtney McEvoy Lee tapped in at second with a time of 2:38.26 and Ivanna Tellez took fourth in 2:44.76.

Hunter's "A" relay squad closed out the race with a third place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay as Charlotte Collazo, Goco, Dzurita and Tiffany Magno combined for the 4:01.84 finish. The Hawks' "B" squad, including Wu, McEvoy Lee, Gloria Reyna and DiGiore finished right behind them in fourth place with a 4:18.38 time.

The Hawks are absent from competition until Feb. 14-19 when they compete in the Metropolitan Collegiate Conference Championships.
