New York, NY - Hunter College athletics took home the 2015-16 CUNY Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup this past week, as announced at the CUNYAC scholar-athlete banquet on Tuesday.
In 1996 the CUNYAC Board of Directors approved the formation of the Commissioner's Cup, the ultimate trophy to be awarded on an annual basis, starting with the 1997-98 academic year. It is presented at the CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Ceremony in May to the top overall athletic program in both the Four-Year College Division and the Community College Division, based upon championship standings for all CUNYAC sports (determined by a point system).
This year's race was one of the closest in history as Hunter fell behind during the fall season, took a small lead during the winter and closed out the year by scoring 40 points in the spring to win the cup by just five points over the College of Staten Island.
The Hawks lead the CUNYAC with ten total Commissioner's Cups, but this is the first they have received since 2009, breaking a six-year win streak by Baruch College.
"It is a proud moment in Hunter's history to win back the Cup," said Director of Athletics, Recreation and Intramurals
Terry Wansart. "Our student-athletes, coaches and administrators have worked very hard, collectively, to move the athletic program back to the championship level which matches our colleges' expectation and tradition of excellence."
