New York, NY - Hunter College athletics took home the CUNYAC Commissioner's Cup for the second-straight year on Thursday night at the annual CUNY Athletic Conference End of Year Banquet.
In 1996 the CUNYAC Board of Directors approved the formation of the Commissioner's Cup, the ultimate trophy to be award on an annual basis. It is presented to the top overall athletic program in the four year college division based upon championship standings for all CUNYAC sports (determined by a point system).
This year's race was on the closest in history as Hunter took a commanding lead in the fall due to great seasons from women's volleyball, men's soccer and women's cross country. The Hawks fell behind during the winter, despite CUNYAC titles from women's swimming and women's indoor track and field.Â
Things got interesting in the spring as Hunter trailed the College of Staten Island by just eight points with one championship to go. The women's outdoor track and field team managed to pull out a conference championship to score 10 points for Hunter and give them the Commsissioner's Cup by just two points.
The Hawks lead the CUNYAC with 11 total cups and have now won the honor two-straight years.
