They defeated #3 John Jay by 10 to advance to the finals for the second straight year but settled for runner up. His athletes landed post-season honors in the form of one being named to each of the First and Second All-Star Teams as well as the Sportsmanship winner in Phoebe Valenton. Additionally, they were the CUNYAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years. After securing the top seed in the conference tournament, the Hawks cruised through the rounds to face the reigning champions, #2 Brooklyn. Down eight points in the fourth quarter, Garrett's team went on a scoring frenzy and dropped 24 points over the final six minutes to secure their first CUNYAC Title since the 2003-04 season. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Hawks were pitted against last year's National Runner up in Bowdoin. The Purple and Gold made an early exit, losing to Bowdoin 93-73 despite a 36-point effort from senior guard, Jade Aponte.
Garrett's players took home a slew of awards. Additionally, his 10-6 CUNYAC record is also the most wins since the 14'-15' season when they had 11. Lastly, it also marks the second straight year the team's win total has increased. Under his guidance, he led the Hawks to a #4 seed in the conference tournament where they handily defeated #5 CCNYÂ to make it to the semi-finals for the third time in four years. However, they were ousted by top seeded Brooklyn. The Hawks then made it to the ECAC Championship Tournament but fell in the opening round to eventual champions, William Patterson. Jade Apone was named to the CUNYACÂ All-Star First Team and was named an All-MET Second Team selection while Christine Patterson was named the CUNYACÂ Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December.
The Hawks found success during the 2016-17 year, posting the most conference wins (eight) since 2014. Under Garrett's guidance, Hunter earned its first CUNYAC Rookie of the Year award in Theresa Leung for the the first time since Kristen Markoe in 2010-11.
