With over 30 years of coaching experience, Ralph Moroni is entering his 10th season as head women’s softball coach for the Hawks. He previously served as head coach of the Hawks from 1991-1995.
The 2020 softball season was canceled shortly after the start of the season due to the COVID-19 situation.
In 2019, Moroni led his team back to the CUNYAC Championship game after a one year hiatus in 2018. His team went 20-12 during the year and for the first time since 2009, they won the Regular Season Title courtesy of an 11-1 CUNYAC record. Battling poor weather throughout the season, they posted an impressive 8-0 home record and had seven wins against a very tough slate of non-conference opponents. They clinched the top seed in the CUNYAC Tournament and went on to play #4 John Jay twice in which they won 8-0 each time. However, the fell only to #2 Staten Island in the double-elimination tournament twice and settled for CUNYAC Tournament Runner Up. Under his direction, Moroni's athletes garnered six CUNYAC Weekly Awards and five All-Star honors while Moroni himself was honored as the conference Coach of the Year.
The Hawks earned a #2 seed during the 2015 season going 19-9, including 10-2 in CUNYAC play. The Hawks once again had to face the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College and the Dolphins of CSI on day 2 of the championship. The Hawks defeated Brooklyn to earn a rematch against CSI, where they fell to the Dolphins. Crofts had another stellar season, earning CUNYAC Player of the Year, with Colangelo, O'Shea and Kresback all being named CUNYAC 1st Team All-Stars. Christine Kline and Victoria Slavik were named CUNYAC 2nd Team All-Stars for their outstanding seasons.
During the 2014 season, Moroni guided the Hawks back to the CUNYAC Softball Championship game with a 15-23 record and going 8-4 in conference play. In the quarterfinals, the Hawks dispatched Baruch College advancing to the double elimination portion of the tournament. On day 1, the Hawks split against Brooklyn College and CSI, forcing a rematch with the Bulldogs and then advancing to take on eventual champions CSI in the championship game. Freshman Taylor Crofts was named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year with Briana Kresback being named CUNYAC 1st Team All-Star and Sara Beck and Meghan O'Shea earning 2nd Team All-Star nods.
Moroni guided the Hawks to the 2013 CUNYAC Softball Championship Game while coaching the 2013 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Erika Colangelo. The #4 seeded Hawks, beat John Jay in the quarterfinals round, went on to upset top ranked Baruch in the semifinals, and clinched a spot in the championships game by beating Brooklyn. In an exciting championship game between Hunter College and the College Staten Island, the Hawks lost 9-8 earning runner-up honors and finishing the season with a 15-28 overall record and an 8-7 CUNYAC record. Five of his Hawks earned CUNYAC Softball Awards (Erika Colangelo, Sophia Ponce, Angelica Iacovetti, Molly Meehan, and Meghan O’Shea).
In 2012, the Hawks placed fourth at the CUNYAC Championships and closed out the season with a 14-28 overall record including a 9-3 mark in the conference finishing the regular season in second place. Five Hawks received CUNYAC All-Star selections (Sophia Ponce, Josephine Estevez, Meghan O’Shea, Crissette Maxwell, and Julia Lipovac).
During the 2011 season, Moroni's squad compiled a 22-16-2 overall record that included a 10-3-1 conference record. Although they were knocked out of the semifinal round of the CUNYAC Championship in heartbreaking fashion, they bounced back to compete in the ECAC Tournament where they made it to the second round.
From 1996 to 2009, Moroni was the head coach at Moore Catholic High School and compiled a 208-73 record. He won the CHSAA New York State Championship twice, CHSAA City Championship four times, Staten Island Championship four times and made 10 consecutive CHSAA Archdiocesan Championship appearances and won six.
In 1991, he took over as the head coach at Hunter College; a position he held through the 1995 season. In those five seasons, Moroni compiled a 63-52 overall record, 20-3 in CUNYAC play, led the Hawks into CUNYAC postseason play in as many years and won the conference championship three years in a row from 1993-95 where he was also named Coach of the Year.
Moroni was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He began his softball coaching career in 1985 at New Utrecht High School as an assistant coach, then served as the assistant coach at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY where his duties included supervising players, organizing drills and assisting the head coach as needed.
Moroni and his wife Doreen reside in Staten Island, NY with their three children; Christina, Richard, and Joseph.
