Jamaica, NY – Sophomore midfielder Mujibullah Mashriqi (Flushing, NY/Flushing) scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1, but the Cougars of Medgar Evers College would score two more to pick up the 3-1 win in a CUNY Athletic Conference men's soccer match on Tuesday evening at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens, NY.

Medgar opened up the scoring with a powerful shot from just inside the midfield line by forward Michael Plummer with a little over 15 minutes left in the first half, the only goal in the first half. Mashriqi's successful penalty kick attempt came at 63:36 total time, giving the Hawks a huge boost who were forced to play most of the second half short-handed.

Each team had legit chances at the net towards the end of a physical second half to break the 1-1 tie, and it would be the Cougars who did so following a corner kick pass from Plummer to Eric Anderson. The proverbial “nail in the coffin” was inserted on a two-on-one goal scored by Kerry Celestine with a little under eight minutes left in the game.

Cougar keeper John Ajirotutu made three saves, while junior Noah Fessler (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) had four saves in net for the Hawks. Hunter now falls to 1-7, 0-3 in the CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers improves to 1-6 and 1-1 in the conference.

Hunter returns to action on Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Hackettstown, NJ to face the Cyclones of Centeary College for a 3:00 p.m. game. In their last meeting, the Cyclones picked a 3-2 victory.
