Solomon Leads Hawks to Victory in Season Opener, 3-1

Kings Point, NY – Senior outside hitter Safiya Solomon (Mount Vernon, NY/Pelham Memorial) had a match high 15 kills and four aces to lead the Hunter women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-24, 30-21, 28-30, 30-24) victory in their season opener against the Mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday evening at the James W. Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, NY.

Senior middle blocker Shanita Scott (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) provided a needed boost to the Hawks attack with a .714 hitting percentage, ten kills and four solo blocks. Also adding to the Hawk assault were junior outside hitter Amanda Kamm (Dix Hills, NY/Hills West) and senior middle blocker Yasmine Daniels (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood). Kamm finished the match with eight kills, four total blocks and two aces, while Daniels finished with seven kills, hitting .438. Senior setter Melissa Hernandez (Ridgewood, NY/Aviation) tallied 45 assists for the Hawks.

The Hawks return to action on Friday, September 7 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to take part in the Vassar Invitational, a two-day tournament hosted by Vassar College.
