Hawks Cruise Past CCNY, 78-58

New York, NY – Senior guard Marlon Smith (Bronx, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored a game high 22 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the field and added a season high eight assists as the Hawks sweep their season series with the City College of New York, 78-58 and pick up their sixth conference victory in the first game of a basketball doubleheader Wednesday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Contrary to the final score, the Hawks actually trailed a majority of the first half as CCNY opened up the game with a 10-2 run. After falling behind by as much as 17 points, Hunter surmounted a 19-2 comeback that knotted the game up at 29-29 heading into the intermission.

Hunter took over in the second half thanks to their big three, juniors Joseph DeLuca (Maspeth, NY/Christ the King), Michael Dodd (Jamaica, NY/Hillcrest) and Frantz Millien (Rockland, NY/North Rockland) who combined for 34 of the Hawks 48 points in the half. DeLuca finished the game with 19, while Dodd and Millien each had 11 points in the victory.

The Beavers had just one individual finish in double figures, sophomore guard Froilan Vazquez (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) who lit up the Hawks in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown, he finished with 17 points.

Hunter improves to 9-9 on the season and remain atop the CUNY Athletic Conference with a 6-2 record. They return to action on Friday, when they host long-time rival Baruch College who enter as the #2 team in the conference with a 6-3 CUNYAC record. This will be the first of a two games series between the Hawks and Bearcats, with Friday's contest taking place at 5:00 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.
