Bronx, NY – Sophomore forward
Andrea Buckham (Jamaica, NY/Flushing) recorded a game high 21 points and 12 rebounds, but it would be the Lehman College Lightning who take the victory, outlasting the Hawks 62-56 in CUNY Athletic Conference action at the APEX in the Bronx, NY.
The Hawks trailed by just three points at the half, 34-31 following three-pointer from freshman
Michelle Gatti (Brooklyn, NY/Christ the King), her first basket of the game. The Hawks were led in the first half by Buckham with 13 points.
It was a close second half most of the way through, with the Hawks tying the game early on and then after failing behind were able to come within a basketball with 8:00 left on the clock. However, the Lightning would score nine unanswered points and held off a late Hunter comeback towards to the end of the half to earn the six point victory.
The Lightening were led by senior guard
Kimberly Kelly (Brooklyn, NY/Paul Robeson) who finished with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, and junior forward
Whittney Barnes (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglas Academy) finished with a double-double, 12 points and 12 boards.
Sophomore guard
Shay Branch-El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) finished with a double-double of her own, 13 points and a game high 15 rebounds, while junior forward
Joanna Balta (Astoria, NY/560 Lykgo) rounded out the Hawks scoring with ten points.
The Hawks (1-8) return to action on Saturday for a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader at Brooklyn College with a start time of 12:30 p.m. which is then followed by a 3:00 p.m. men's game.
