New York, NY – Senior outside hitter
Olga Petrenko (Bronx, NY/Environmental Studies) finished with a match high 12 kills, hitting .333 in a hard fought match against regional powerhouse Stevens Institute of Technology who earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) win over the Hawks in a non-conference women's volleyball match Wednesday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Tonight's victory improves Stevens to 20-4 overall and the team recorded its 12th sweep of the season. Hunter, now 16-5 on the year, was handed the team's first sweep since falling to Skidmore in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Stevens dominated the start of the first set, scoring seven unanswered points with sophomore libero
Julia Reilly (Oradell, NJ/River Dell Regional) recording two aces. However, with a balanced offensive effort, the Hawks battled back and were able to take a 14-13 lead. Following this run, the rotation would go back in favor of Stevens who scored six unanswered points again on the serve of
Reilly. Hunter was able to close the gap to two points, but fell short by six in the end.
Stevens remained in control for the second and third sets, despite several efforts by the Hawks. Stevens outside hitter
Sarah Byrne (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) tied the match high of 12 kills to lead the Ducks. Senior setter
Melissa Rhode (New Orleans, LA/Benjamin Franklin) also contributed 19 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Reilly would go on to finish with a match high 19 digs.
Senior setter
Melissa Hernandez (Ridgewood, NY/Aviation) tallied 18 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Tracey Igwe (Bronx, NY/DeWeitt Clinton) added five kills.
The Hawks will return to action next Tuesday, October 21 for a 7:00 p.m. CUNY Athletic Conference match at Brooklyn College. Stevens will now head to Hackettstown, NJ for a non-conference tri-match against Centenary College and Central College on Thursday, October 16 starting at 4:00 p.m.
