McKenna Nets 17 In 58-47 Win At John Jay

New York, NY – Sophomore guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) scored a game high 17 points, while dishing out seven assists as the Hawks dominated in their conference opener, defeating John Jay College 58-47 Tuesday evening at the Doghouse in New York, NY.

Junior guard Shay Branch-El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) opened the game with two lay-ups to give Hunter the lead, one which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Hunter held a 27-16 lead at the end of the first half with Branch-El-Vielot leading the way with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.

McKenna got things going in the second half, scoring 11 of her 17 points and helping build up a 20 points lead. John Jay was able to chip away at the deficit, cutting it down to just an eight point lead with 2:06 left to do in the game. However, the Hawks stood their ground and came out with the victory.

Junior forward Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/Flushing) and center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) each contributed 14 points for the Hawks, while Branch-El-Vielot finished with eight points, six rebound and five steals.

The Hawks now improve to 2-2 on the season and are 1-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Bloodhounds fall to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in the conference. Hunter will be back in action on Friday, December 5 when they host CCNY at 5:30 p.m. as part of the 2008 Homecoming Celebration.
