Nicholas Flagg (Queens, NY/Cardozo) opened the game with a flurry of three-points and senior forward
Frantz Millien (Rockland, NY/North Rockland) iced the game with free-throws in the final second to give the Hawks a 75-65 win over The City College of New York in a CUNY Athletic Conference men's basketball game Friday night on Homecoming at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Despite the Hawks impeccable shooting in the first half that included a ten point lead, the Beavers managed to fight their way back into the game behind the play of sophomore guard Xavier Gonzalez (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) who scored 16 of his game high 24 points in the first stanza. Flagg led the Hawks after one half with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, but the neither team had the advantage heading into the intermission as the scoreboard read 41-41.
Hunter opened up the second half with a 13-0 run to jump out ahead 54-41, preventing CCNY from scoring a point for almost seven minutes. CCNY would come back to cut the lead to just three points with 3:10 left in the game, Millen sank two free-throws to put Hunter up by five points and they never looked back from there.
Millien finished the game with a team high 23 points and nine rebounds, while
Flagg added 21 points and five steals. Senior guard
Emiljano Kinaj (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) was the only other Hawk to finish in double figures, scoring 11 points and also dished out six assists.
Sophomore forward Brandon Mellete (New York, NY/BMCC) finished with the games only double-double, scoring 14 point and pulling down 13 boards for the Beavers. Junior guard Franklyn Dunn (Mt. Vernon, NY/Iona Prep) contributed for CCNY with ten points and eight rebounds.
Hunter now improves to 3-3 on the year and are 2-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while CCNY falls to 0-6 and 0-2 in the conference. Hunter will return to action on Monday, when they head to Madison, NJ for a non-conference game with FDU-Florham at 7:00 p.m.
