New York, NY – The Hunter women's fencing team swept the competition Wednesday night, defeating Queens College 23-4, CCNY 17-10 and Yeshiva University 25-2 at the Hunter Quad held in the B4 Gymnasium of the Hunter Sportsplex.
Sabre
Second-year fencer
Stella Shifrin (Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) and junior
Elizabeth Arce (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) each finished the day with a perfect 6-0 record in sabre bouts against Queens and Yeshiva, while junior
Nicole Schirmer (Selden, NY/Newfield) was 5-0 on the day.
Foil
The Hunter foilists were led by junior
Christina Lio (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) who went 6-3 on the day, followed by senior
Nikisha Charles (St. David's, Grenada/St. Joseph Covent) at 5-4 and sophomore
Annie Zhen (New York, NY/MCSM) who also finished the day at 5-4.
Epee
Junior
Centhia Obi (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Center) had an outstanding day as she was the only Hawk to finish the day with a perfect 9-0 record. Sophomore
Amanda Birro (Centereach, NY/Centereach) also had a nice outing, finishing the day at 7-1 as the Hawk epee team went unbeaten on the day.
The women's fencing team will be back in action next Saturday, January 31 when they travel to Wellesley, Massachusetts for the Wellesley College Invitational.
