New York, NY – The 2008-09 CUNY Athletic Conference women's swimming regular season championship was decided by 18 tenths of a second as the Hunter College 200-freestyle relay team just edged out Baruch College with a time of 2:11.61 to that of Baruch's 2:11.79 to earn 11 points and a 107-98 victory, clinching the Hawks fifth consecutive regular season title on Friday at the ARC on the campus of Baruch College.
The score stood at 94 apiece entering the final event with the Bearcats looking strong after winning the 200-medley relay earlier in the meet. After three swimmers had hit the pool, Baruch had what seemed to be a substantial lead. However, freshman
Kelsey Purcell had the best swim of her short Hawk career in the anchor position of the relay team, making up the distance and taking home the victory.
Junior
Heather Alvord was the only Hawk to earn two individual victories on the day, taking the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:24.26, followed by Purcell who finished second with a time of 2:35.42. Later in the meet, Alvord finished a little over ten second faster than the second place finisher in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:11.36.
Sophomore
Marian Wu had an impressive swim in the 50-yard freestyle, taking first with a time of 31.60, while sophomore
Nicole Hracs earned the team's final individual victory in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.14.
Hunter, now 6-3 on the year and 5-0 in the conference, return home on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. meet with Mount Saint Mary College. Be sure to check back here for updates on the location of Wednesday's meet.
