New York, NY – Competing against their uptown rivals, the women's fencing team defeated The City College of New York on Wednesday night, led by behind the play of the sabre squad who won eight of nine bouts en route to the 17-10 victory.
Senior
Nicole Schirmer (Selden, NY/Newfield) was a perfect 3-0 along with junior
Joanne Ong (Queens Village, NY/American Studies) to lead the way for the sabre team. Freshman
Sorrel Stetson (Astoria, NY/Clonlara) subbed in after starting the season at foil and went 2-1.
The Hawks clinched the match with a 7-2 win at epee, with junior
Amanda Birro (Centereach, NY/Centereach) winning two bouts in her season debut and sophomore
Wendy Mak (Long Island City, NY/Baruch) won her only two bouts, while freshman
Monica Yuen (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) picked up a win in the third set of bouts. Depsite a 7-2 loss at foil, senior
Christina Lio (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) still had a good match, winning two-of-three bouts.
The women's fencing team will be back in action on Friday, December 4 when they host Army for a 7:00 p.m. match as part of the 2009 Homecoming celebration in the B4 Gymnasium.
