Box Score
New York, NY – Junior guard
Rocco Rubino (Brooklyn, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored a season high 30 points along with eight rebounds to lead the Hawks to a 102-90 win over Vassar College in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.
After a competitive first half that saw nine lead changes and five ties, the Hawks came out on top with a 47-42 advantage. The first part of the second half was all Hunter as the extended their lead to 18 points with 12:29 left on the clock. However, the Brewers did not give up and would cut the lead to just seven points with 7:29 left following a 16-5 run. This would be as close as Vassar would get in the second half, as the Hawks broke the Brewers press defense for a couple of easy baskets to regain a double-digit lead and then closed out the game from the free-throw line.
Freshman guard
Eric Klingsberg (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) continues to impress, earning a starting role earlier in the week, he scored 24 points and shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Junior forward
Maxwell Dubois (Hollywood, FL/Dillard) added a 20 points performance of his own, scoring 21 and pulling down a team high nine rebounds.
Vassar had five individuals finishing in double figures, led by freshman guard John Herzog with 23 points. Sophomore forward David de la Torre scored 15 points, sophomore guard Caleb McGraw had 13, while freshman John Donnelly and junior Chris Whitney each scored 12 points.
The 102 points scored by Hunter is the most points scored since defeating Manhattanville 110-108 in overtime back on November 26, 2003.
Hunter, now 5-3 on the year, will now travel to Wayne, NJ for a non-conference game with William Paterson on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Vassar falls to 2-6 on the year and have the tough task of facing William and Mary on December 19.
