Hawks Grounded by Bearcats

New York, NY – Junior guard Rocco Rubino (Brooklyn, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored a team high 22 points and freshman guard Eric Klingsberg (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) added 20 points, but after trailing by only three at the end of the first half, the Hawks would end up falling behind in the second to ultimately drop a 95-81 decision to the streaking Bearcats of Baruch College who earned their ninth consecutive victory in a CUNY Athletic Conference game Wednesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

After a good start, the Hawks would find themselves trailing for most of the first half, falling behind by as much as 14 points. However, they were able to surmount a 13-2 run that closed the gap to the just three points heading into halftime. At the half, Baruch was led by junior guard Tammer Farid and junior guard Lionel Hilaire who each had ten points. For the Hawks, Rubino was the high man with nine, while Klingsberg and sophomore guard Mark Courtien (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) each had eight points.

Rubino then opened the second half with a made lay-up and free-throw to tie the game for just the third time. However, Baruch would go on a 17-4 run to claim a 13 point lead with 14:09 on the block and never looked back. Hunter was able to cut the lead to single digits on two occasions, but never got closer than seven points.

Hiliare would end up leading all scorers with 23 points, followed by junior forward Sean Loftus who shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the field for 22 points along with a game high eight rebounds. Senior forward George Kunkel and junior forward Chris Beauchamp added 20 and 14 points respectively.

For the Hawks, Rubino led the way with his 22 points along with eight assists, while Klingsberg had a team high seven rebounds along with 20 points and junior guard Maxwell Dubois (Hollywood, FL/Dillard) netted 17 points.

The Hawks (6-7) will now head to the Bronx, NY on Friday, where they will face Lehman College in the second game of a CUNYAC men's & women's doubleheader with the women playing at 5:00 p.m. and the men at 7:15 p.m.
