Saratoga Springs, NY - On Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, the women's volleyball team traveled to Saratoga Springs, New York to compete in the Skidmore College Tournament. Over the two-day event, the Hawks fell to Mount Saint Michael's, St. Lawrence and host Skidmore, but picked up a win over Cazenovia to put their record at 12-14, 8-0 CUNYAC.
The Hawks began the Tournament with a match against Saint Michael's in which they fell by a score of 3-1. The Purple Knights got out to a 1-0 lead by taking the first set 25-11, but the Hawks came back claiming a 25-19 victory in the secont. Despite the backing of a game high 15 kills by junior Christine Luebcke and another 10 by Mallory Grubler, they would go on to lose the match, setting them back 0-1 to start the tournament.
Concluding the first day was a match against host Skidmore. The Hawks couldn't seem to hit their stride as they fell 25-13 and 25-11 in the first two sets. Allthough they picked up some steam, it was too little too late as they went down in three with the final set concluding 25-21 in favor of the Thoroughbreds.
As the second day got underway, Hunter showed signs of life against Cazenovia as they swept in three straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-8, 25-14 behind Grubler's 18 kills. Rounding out the tournament, the squad attempted to even out their record with a match against the Saints of St. Lawrence. After falling behind two sets to none, the Hawks bounced back with a win in the third set, 25-23. Despite a combine 25 kills between Luebcke and Grubler, they would not be able to rally and would fall 25-17 in the fourth and final set.
Christine Luebcke was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, October 26 when they take on the Yellow Jackets of City Tech. The contest is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
