Hawks Post 1-3 Record at the Hunter Invitational

New York, NY - On Saturday and Sunday, October 30-31, the Hawks hosted the Hunter Volleyball Invitational which featured seven other teams; Ramapo, USMMA, Elmira, Old Westbury, Manhattanville+, Farmingdale State and Monclair State. Elmira claimed the tournament crown going a perfect 4-0 while the Hawks collected one win and three losses.

The Hawks opened up the tournament with a match against Ramapo in which they lost, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 27-25. After a break, they came back for the final match of the first day and redeemed themselves against the United States Merchant Marine Academy in three straight sets, 2-13, 28-22, 25-15.

To begin the second day, Hunter took on the 2-0 Elmira Soaring Eagles. After dropping the first two matches, 25-8, 26-24, the Hawks bounced back with a 25-15 win in the third set but fell in the fourth and final set by a score of 25-21. Closing out the event, coach Ray Bello and his team faced the Rams of Farmingdale State who were looking for their first tournament win. The match would go into five sets, each of which were decided by five or less points, but it was the Rams that had the upper hand at the end to notch their first win of the weekend while Hunter dropped to 1-3.

Junior Mallory Grubler recorded double digits in kills and digs in three out of the four games and had a total of 58 (kills) and 55 (digs) on the weekend. She was also named to the All-Tournament team. Kim Hirten had 35 kills and 60 digs total while Katina Boutis posted 136 assists which included 46 against Old Westbury.

The Hawks return to action when they host CSI in the quarterfinal round of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament on Tuesday, November 2 at the Hunter Sportsplex. The match is slated for a 6:00 pm start.
