New York, NY - On Monday night, November 15, the men's basketball team hosted their season opener against the Valiants of Manhattanville College. Both teams were evenly matched and were neck and neck the whole game, but it was the Valiants who came out on top in a close 64-61 game. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 0-1 while Manhattanville grabs their first win.
Eric Klingsberg notched the first four points for the Hawks as they took control of the scoreboard early on. Manhattanville, led by Trevor Pointer, who scored the team's first 10 points, kept them in the game as they never fell behind by more than four points. 13 points from
Mark Courtien enabled Hunter to stay ahead for most of the first half, but two late free throw shots by Pointer gave the Valiants a 29-28 lead heading into the second half.
Manhattanville came out and quickly put Hunter in a nine point deficit just three minutes into the second half. However, sparked by two made free throws by Klingsburg, the Hawks battled back to tie the score at 44 with 11 minutes left to play. Over the next six minutes, the Valiants would pull away by seven on two occasions, but again, Hunter surged and came within three with 2:30 left on the clock. Panagiotis Koutsoloukas and Courtien made it a one point game with 50 seconds to go. Lamar Glass of the Valiants knocked down two free throws to go up 64-61 in the final seconds of the game to secure the win.
Pointer posted a game high of 21 points while Courtien had 17 and Klingsberg and Anthony Uter each had 11. Koutsoloukas grabbed nine boards and six points in the loss.
The Hawks return to action this Friday, November 20 when they take part in the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament.
