Volleyball Falls to Clarkson at NCAA Regional Tournament

Box Score

New York, NY - On Friday, November 12, the women's volleyball team entered the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament held at New York University. In the opening round, the Hawks battled for four sets before falling to the Golden Knights of Clarkson University, concluding their season with a 17-18 final overall record.

The Hawks opened up the game with a 6-0 run, forcing Clarkson to take a time out and rethink their strategy, which paid off as they scored four straight points to close the gap. Hunter opened up another six point lead, 18-12, hoping it would be enough to cushion for the rest of the set, but the Golden Knights surged with a late 13-2 run, reaching 25 and claiming a first set victory.

The second set was evenly match as both sides went point for point and neither letting each other get more than a single point lead. The see-saw match would remain almost dead even until the late stages of the set, when the Hawks narrowly pulled ahead by two and held off Clarkson 25-23 to even the match out at one set a piece.

In the third set, the Hawks grabbed the early lead, but Clarkson gained momentum and took control of the scoreboard and went on an 11-3 run in the late stages of the set and pulled away 25-18 to head into the fourth set.

The final set got underway with the Golden Knights getting ahead, 3-2, and then scoring 10 unanswered points to go up 13-2. The Hawks ran out of steam and would not be able to recover from the defict, falling 25-7 to conclude their season.

Christine Luebcke notched 16 kills in the loss while Mary Grace Vergara collected 24 digs and setter Katina Boutis posted 27 assists. Sara Artus had a game high of 20 kills.

The Hawks conclude a season which included going undefeated in the regular season against conference opponents and winning the 2010 CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament.
