Newark, NJ - On Wednesday, December 8, the men's basketball took on the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark University in a nonconference meeting. After falling behind early in the game, the Hawks had to play from behind the entire game and despite a late last effort, fell by a score of 89-79. With the loss, the Hawks even out their record at 4-4, 1-1 CUNYAC while Rutgers-Newark advances to 8-0.
Al'Don Muhammad got the Raiders on the board first with a made free throw, which was the start of an opening 6-0 run. As the game progressed, the deficit Hunter faced grew to as much as 18 points with just over nine minutes to go. A three pointer by John Akinyemi at 18:45 sparked a 19-9 Hawk run, bringing the game within eight points with just under four minutes left in the half. Rutgers responded with six unanswered points, extending their lead back to 18, but a made foul shot by Eric Klingsberg and four straight points by Maxwell Dubois cut the lead to 11 at the half.
Like the first half, the Scarlet Raiders controlled the score board and built on their 11 point lead from half time, turning it into as much as 21 at the 12:20 mark. However, the Hawks did not give up as they slowly chipped away at the lead, bringing the game within reach at the 1:22 mark as they were down just 83-78. Rutgers put the late charge to a stop and secured their victory by scoring five unanswered points in the final minute to win by 10.
Dubois led the Hawks with a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Anthony Uter and sophomore Izzy Hoffman collected eight and 10 points respectively while Senior Center Panagiotis Koutsoloukas grabbed a total of six rebounds and had 11 points.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, December 12th when they play host to the pioneers of William Paterson University for a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
