Box Score

Newark, NJ - On Wednesday, December 8 the women's basketball team travelled to Newark, NJ to take on the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark for a non conference game. After a see-saw battle that featured six lead changes, it was the Hawks who pulled through in the final minutes, coming out on top and snapping a seven game Scarlet Raider win streak. With the win, the Hawks move to 3-5, 1-1 CUNYAC while Rutgers-Newark moves to 7-1.

In the first half, both the Hawks and the Raiders went back and forth, swapping the lead on five different occasions. Freshman Kristen Markoe got the Hawks on the board first with a layup at 19:00. A foul shot made by Junior Johanna Keilwitz at 9:47 gave Hunter a six point lead, the largest of the first half. The Raiders came riding back as they tied the game twice in the final 3:04, but senior Shamar Stewartson converted on a three point play and followed it up with a made free throw to give the Hawks a 30-26 lead heading into halftime.

The Raiders opened up the second half with a 7-0 run, sparked by three pointer off the hands of Jared Tactuk. Despite being outscored 15-5 in the first 5:58, the Hawks kept the game close and were up by two points with 1:14 left to play. Courtney Woodard scored on a layup with just under a minute to go to tie the game, but freshman Kristen Markoe responded with a layup of her own to make it a two point game. A foul by Samantha Grippo sent Markoe to the charity stripe where she sunk her two attempts, making it a four point game with just 10 seconds remaining. Tactuk nailed a three pointer from deep to bring the game within one, but Stewartson, who was sent to the line on a foul by SahQuanna Marshall, drained her two shots, sealing the 57-54 Hawk victory.

Stewartson led the Hawks with a game high of 19 points and tacking on six steals and seven rebounds. Freshman Nicole Lenard recorded a double-double, scoring 10 and pulling down 13 rebounds. Markoe collected seven rebounds and added 13 points for the Hawks as well.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 11th when they will travel to Middletown, CT for a matchup against Wesleyan University. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
