Hawks Come Back to Pull Out Win in Overtime

Madison, New Jersey – On Monday night, December 5, the mens' basketball team played visitor to the Devils of Farleigh Dickinson University. Despite falling behind by 15 at the half, the Hawks rallied back to send it in to overtime in which they came back yet again in the final seconds of the game to pull out the win, 65-63. The victory moves Hunter to 4-3, 2-0 CUNYAC while FDU drops to 2-6.

Ricky Fetske put the Devils on the board first with a layup that sparked an 8-0 run to open up the first 4:27 of the game. Anthony Uter temporarily stopped the bleeding, by knocking down a basket to put his team on the board, but the Hawks would get no closer than within four points of the Devils throughout the entire first half. FDU, on 13 of 31 shooting from the field, extended their lead to 15 heading into halftime as Hunter only managed to shoot .276 and connecting on just one of six attempts from behind the arc.

Hunter battled back and hung tough during the entire second half, slowly but surely closing the gap. A 5-0 run closed the gap to five points with just over 10 minutes to go, but the Devils brought their lead back up to 10 with 5:47 left. Down by nine with 3:25 left in the game, the Hawks made a final push, backed by two made free throws from Eric Klingsberg, who followed his own scores up with a converted three point play and two more made shots from the charity stripe to bring the game within two points with 1:13 left to play.

A missed shot by Adam Katz saw a rebound and score by Maxwell Dubois to tie the game at 54 apiece with 28 seconds left. Katz had a chance at winning the game for the Devils, but missed the final shot of regulation with four seconds to go, sending it into overtime.

In overtime, FDU struck first on a made three pointer by Katz. The final minutes was a see saw battle that had three ties and lead changes compared to the entire game where there was just a single tie. With 12 seconds left and the score knotted at 63, a foul by Koko Karajelian sent Klingsberg to the foul line for two shots in which he made both, putting the pressure on the opposition. One final attempt by FDU's Will Green resulted in a blocked shot by Anthony Uter who secured the rebound and the win for the Hawks.

Dubois recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes of work while Klingsberg and Mark Courtein posted 18 and 14 points each. Anthony Uter chipped in with nine points while pulling down 12 boards.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, December 8 when they travel to Newark, New Jersey to take on Rutgers-Newark. The game is slated for an 8:00 pm start.
