New York, NY – The Hunter women's fencing team hosted the 2010 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Team Championship on Sunday, competing against six other institutions in dual bouts with the Hawks finishing 1-5 and Hunter senior
Nicole Schirmer going 15-3 on the day.
Hunter 19 – Yeshiva 8
Senior
Christina Lio and sophomore
Natalia Dittren each won all three of their bouts for a 7-2 victory at foil. In sabre, Schirmer and junior Joanna Ong also went undefeated with three wins, while freshman
Sorrel Stetson was 2-1 to give the squad an 8-1 win. The Lady Macs just edged out the epee team for a 5-4 win, sophomore
Nina Hsu won two of her three bouts for the Hawks.
Stevens 22 – Hunter 5
Schirmer had a good match with Stevens, winning all three of her sabre bouts, but the rest of the team struggled as foil got shutout 9-0 and epee lost 8-1.
Haverford 20 – Hunter 7
The epee team had a close 5-4 loss to Haverford with junior
Amanda Birro and sophomore
Wendy Mak each finishing 2-1. The foil team fell 8-1, while sabre dropped a 7-2 bout with Schirmer going 2-1.
CCNY 16 – Hunter 11
The sabre squad grabbed a 7-2 win over CCNY with Schirmer and Ong going 3-0. Lio was the only foilist able to grab a win, while epee fell 6-3 following an injury to Birro in her third bout of the match.
Drew 14 – Hunter 13
In a close bout, each team was shorthanded as the Rangers only had two competing in foil and Hunter was down a person in Epee following Birro's injury against CCNY. The foil team earned a 7-2 win with Lio and Dittren winning both their bouts. In sabre, the Hawks fell 5-4, Schirmer was 2-1. Hunter lost epee 7-2.
Johns Hopkins 22 – Hunter 5
Against a strong Johns Hopkins team, Schirmer still went unbeaten in all three of her bouts, while Ong was 2-1 for a 6-3 sabre victory. Foil was shutout 9-0, and epee lost 7-2.
The team will now prepare for the EWFC Individual Championship which will be held at Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, February 28.
