Men’s & Women’s Tennis Blanked by Drew

Flushing, NY – The Hunter men's and women's tennis teams were in action on Wednesday, hosting Drew University and it would be the Rangers who came out victorious on both fronts, taking 9-0 decisions over the Hawks at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

On the women's side, the Hawks had two tight battles in doubles that could have gone either way. At first doubles, senior Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) and sophomore Ericka Jaramillo (Jamaica, NY/Townsend Harris) took a 4-0 lead, but would end up falling 8-5. At second doubles senior Veronica Efimenko (Belarus/#181) and sophomore Jennifer Kraham (East Northport, NY/Commack) teamed up for the first-time and also held a four game lead early on, but Michelle Gbelama and Chelsea Lipp of Drew fought back for a 9-7 win.

In singles action, Efimenko had two tight sets, but lost both, 6-4, 6-4 to Hayley Dowling, while Kim lost just her third match of the year to Vivian Peng 6-4, 6-1. The final match of the night, sixth singles with Jaramillo and Sophia Chen was played out with a super tie breaker second set, after Chen won the first set 7-6 (9-7).

Hunter's women's team now falls to 14-5 on the year, while the Rangers improve to 7-2. The Hawks will return to action next Friday, April 23 when they head up north to face SUNY-New Paltz and then will take part in the New Paltz Tournament the following day.
