Hawks Falter in Five to Blue Jays

On Friday, September 16, the women's volleyball team traveled to Brooklyn, New York for a non-conference match against Polytechnic University. After going back and forth for the first four matches, the Blue Jays came out on top in the deciding fifth set to earn a win. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 3-3, 3-0 CUNYAC.

In the first game, Hunter, backed by a combine nine kills between juniors Christine Luebcke and Mallory Grubler, came out on top by a two point margin, 27-25. The Blue Jays responded with a win in the second set, 25-19, to tie it at 1-1. The next two sets were split with Hunter winning in the third and Polytech grabbing the fourth. In the fifth and final set, the Hawks began to falter down the stretch and had to settle for the loss as the Blue Jays narrowly held on for the win, 15-11.

Luebcke had a team high 20 kills and 14 digs while Grubler recorded 11 kills. Sophomore Kim Hirten tallied six kills and 19 digs while Mary Grace Vergara chipped in with 24 digs and Katina Boutis posted 36 assists on the day.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, September 21 when they visit John Jay for a conference matchup scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
