Hawks Finish Fourth at NYU Tournament; Grubler Named to All-Tournament Team

Over the weekend, the women's volleyball team participated in the two-day NYU Violets tournament which featured Centenary, Bates, NYU and CCNY. After splitting two games on the first day, the Hawks dropped both of their matches on day two to finish fourth overall. Their record stands at 5-6, 2-0 CUNYAC.

Day 1: In the opening round, The Blue Jays of Elmhurst proved to be too strong as they out-played the Hawks in the first set, 25-6. Hunter hit their stride and picked up momentum in a much closer second set, but fell, 25-21. The Blue Jays took the third and final set, 25-11 to serve Hunter their first loss of the tournament.

The Hawks bounced back in the closing match of the evening as they took on Centenary. The match was decided in three close sets as the Hawks got the best of the Cyclones, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 on the strength of 20 kills by junior Mallory Grubler.

Day 2: The first match of the final day saw the Hawks battle through five sets with the Bobcats of Bates. Despite a combine 30 kills between Grubler and Christine Luebcke, and 36 assists from Katina Boutis, the Hunter fell 16-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 10-15.

Closing out the tournament, the Hawks faced host NYU. The Violets claimed the win in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-13, 25-14 as they won the tournament, losing just a single set.

Grubler was named to the All-Tournament team along with Mina Baban (MVP) and Rachel Sawyer of NYU, Nicole Russell and Eliza Pyne of Bates and Jelena Markovic from Centenary.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 28 when they travel to Brooklyn, New York to take on Brooklyn College in a conference matchup. The game is slated for a 6:00 pm start.
