New York, NY - On Friday, January 7, the men's basketball team took on cross town rivals, Baruch College in what has been known as the “Battle of Lexington.” Despite a late game surge, the Hawks fell into a hole that proved to be too much to climb out of as the Bearcats would go on and take a 61-52 win, advancing their record to 8-5, 3-0 CUNYAC while Hunter slips to 7-6, 2-2 CUNYAC.
Panagiotis Koutsoloukas and Maxwell Dubois got the Hawks off to a good start early on as they combined for the first eight of Hunter's 21 points. However, an ensuing 21-3 Bearcat run over 7:43 put them in a significant 27-11 deficit with just over six minutes to play in the first half. With 26 seconds left in the half, John Akinyemi was fouled on a layup in which he connected on and had an opportunity to convert on three point play and make it a ten point game, but missed. The Hawks would head into the locker room at halftime down 32-21.
In the first 5:20 of the second half, Baruch extended their lead back to 16 and held at least a 12 point advantage until the 6:04 mark when Mark Courtein scored to cut the lead back down to 10. Dubois, with just under three minutes left to play, connected on a layup to make it an eight point game, 56-48. The defense of Baruch didn't allow the Hawks to score until 50 seconds to go when Akinyemi broke the two minute drought and made it a six point game on a made layup. However, the run was cut short as Baruch connected on last minute free throws to seal the win, 61-52.
Koutsoloukas grabbed a team tying seven rebounds to go along with a game high 17 points while Dubois had seven boards and 12 rebounds. Chris Beauchamp, William Falkenhainer and Arki Wisnu of the Bearcats each scored in the double digits.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 12 when they travel down town to take on NYU in a non conference matchup which is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
