Hawks Earn 77-66 Win over City Tech

Box Score

New York, NY – The men's basketball team played host to the Yellow Jackets of City Tech tonight in a conference meeting. After a tight first half, Hunter managed to break away with a second half surge in the final eight minutes to put the Yellow Jackets away 77-66. With the win, Hawks 9-8, 4-3 CUNYAC while City Tech drops to 1-15, 0-7 CUNYAC.

The Hawks came out firing, connecting on their first three shots, two of which came off the hands of junior Mark Courtien from behind the arc, making it a quick 8-2 game less than two minutes into the first half. The Yellow Jackets hung tough and fought to stay in it, tying the game at 17 by a layup by Nathaniel Young and then taking a four point lead at the 17:21 mark. Toward the remaining four minutes, the Hawks regained the lead with a Panagiotis Koutsoloukas layup and was capped with a Terry Carpenter bucket to give Hunter a six point lead heading into overtime.

Early in the second half, the Hawk lead diminished quickly due to an 11-3 run to knot the game at 39 all. However, it's as close as they would get as Hunter, backed by 56 percent shooting from the field, and draining four of seven attempts from behind the arc, surged ahead from that point on and extended their lead to as much as 18 at one point. The gap was just too much for City Tech to overcome as the Hawks powered down the stretch and secured the win.

Koutsoloukas posted 14 points and as many rebounds to post his fifth double-double of the season while two of his teammates also scored in double digits; Courtein with 16 and Jeffrey Daza with a team high 19. Young had a game high of 28 points on 10 of 24 shooting.

The Hawks are back in action on Monday, January 24 when they host Connecticut College in a non conference matchup. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
